Background

The Bristol Blue Reef Aquarium gives hospitality to a wide variety of marine species, including crabs, lobsters, seahorses and sharks.

Purposes

The structure includes an IMAX screen for 3D film shows and is completely dependent on the refrigeration system so that the water temperature is kept constant and the IMAX pricey lamps are protected from burn-out.

Project

For the project, we used a cutting-edge refrigeration system with a two compressors Turbomiser chiller, which exploits the water from the dock of Bristol in order to optimise efficiency and to dramatically reduce management costs.

Results

With just one compressor running and 7 kW of power consumption, the system can produce about 90 kW (26 RT) of refrigeration, that is EER 12.9 (W/W)*.

*Cooling kW/RT = 0.27 – Cooling EER BTU/Wh = 44.02
