In March CO2 levels broke the 400 ppm record

A new record of CO2 concentration on the atmosphere was recorded in March. Figures were released by the US agency NOAA (National Ocean and Atmosphere Administration), which pointed out that for the first time CO2 concentration levels surpassed 400 ppm (parts per million) globally for a month.

In addition to these data, the US agency highlights the fact that this rise in CO2 levels  is “manmade”, as before the industrial revolution began in around 1850, the global concentration stood at 280 parts per million CO2. Half of the current rise occurred since 1980. (http://newsroom.unfccc.int/unfccc-newsroom/wake-up-call-ahead-of-paris-2015-400ppm-co2-level-breached/)

Scientists at NOAA also pointed out that even if manmade emissions were dramatically cut […] the concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere would only stabilise, not fall. This highlights the urgent need to take action to cut emissions and find alternatives in order to limit global warming.

“ThinkForward»” is now online: a new perspective on our world

Great news from Geoclima: our new blog ThinkForward» is now online. The blog will be the place where you can find in-depth news about different issues, with links to reports and articles from the main magazines and newspapers.

The blog will focus on three main categories: the Geoclima world, with in-depth studies about the different applications; the world of refrigeration in general, with news about the latest technologies, regulations and opportunities; the green culture, with news and analysis about environmental conservation and sustainability.

The purpose of the Blog is to offer a press review of quality contents you will be able to read and share.

If you would like to suggest further news we should share, please just do it by writing at: thinkforward@geoclima.com. You are our readers and we would love to offer something that is of interest to you!

Hope to see you on the blog and as always #THINKFORWARD!

Food storage: the solutions developed by Geoclima

In this day and age the quality and security of food products is a very important and much-discussed issue, so much so that food, and precisely “Feed the world, energy for life” is the core theme of EXPO Milano 2015, which is going to start on the 1st of May.

In the food industry and storage, refrigeration, air conditioning and air treatment in general play an essential role. The storage of food and beverage, may it be in either warehouses, supermarkets or wine cellars, requires a reliable and efficient cooling, which is paramount for the quality and safety of the finished product.

For several years now we have been dealing with this kind of applications through the development of specific solutions.

WAREHOUSES

food storage and safety in warehousesWe design and manufacture solutions able to meet all specific requirements deriving from the installation in very large warehouses for the conservation of food. In the design of these plants, there are many aspects that must be kept into consideration: the control and maintenance of temperature, the control of temperature changes caused by external climate variations and interventions within the warehouse (opening/closing of doors, etc.), the energy consumption, the necessity of a reliable and continuous operation.
In a special project for a warehouse for potatoes storage in India (here is the case study: www.geoclima.com/portfolio-item/india-potatoes-storage) we developed a chiller with open screw compressors, ammonia and EC fans, providing low noise levels, high efficiency and consistent performance.

SUPERMARKETS (Waitrose)

food storage and safety in supermarkets

For the supermarket chain Waitrose we designed and manufactured the world-first HFO chiller (here is the case study: www.geoclima.com/portfolio-item/waitrose-bromley). The system uses two 180 kW air-cooled chillers with semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors and HFO1234ze refrigerant with GWP <1. Although tests had indicated a loss of capacity of around 24% when compared with R134a, mean power absorbed is almost 27% less, with a resulting COP that is actually better than R134a. Moreover, the comparison of this plant with another sale point with a similar system using another refrigerant has pointed out a reduction of 22% in energy consumption.
After this first project with HFO, we have developed for Waitrose almost 50 projects and most of them are reciprocating compressor chillers with HFO1234ze.

WINE CELLARS

storage and safety in wine cellarsIn the storage of wine a fundamental role is played by air conditioning. Good wine is the result of many factors, that are, for example:

  • Precise control of temperature
  • Ventilation
  • Proper air humidity
  • Thermal insulation

With our special chillers, we can provide the perfect solution for this kind of applications: both big and small dimensions, high efficiency and reliability, low vibrations and resulting low noise levels, reduced energy consumption.

Focus: are chillers the answer in a low GWP world?

On April 20-21 in Bangkok was held a two-day workshop on HFC Management, which preceded the OEWG Montreal Protocol meeting. On this occasion technical experts and industry representatives discussed about HFCs and their alternatives. The main focus was on the difficult use of low GWP refrigerants for medium-size air conditioning systems and the possibility to move towards a broader use of chillers, which provide good performance with different low GWP alternatives including hydrocarbons, HFOs, ammonia and water.

Clima Tech is now part of the Geoclima group

After a 15-years-long partnership, in March 2015 Geoclima has acquired Clima Tech GmbH. Geoclima and Clima Tech together will now be able to improve the offer of solutions for the HVAC market and to meet all specific requirements connected to refrigeration and air treatment.
The two companies together can count on more than 50 years of experience in the design and manufacture of special equipment, from ventilation units, to chiller, to AHUs.
Geoclima and Clima Tech employ the same standards of production and will now be able to answer more promptly and efficiently to the requests for AHU-chiller integrated solutions.
Competence and expertise combined to meet the particular needs of the market of chillers and AHUs, not only for commercial and industrial applications, but also for hospitals, operating theatres and clean rooms.
